Project Status August 2020
92 units of affordable independent senior living (see graphic depiction below) for veterans and other income-qualified resident seniors is planned, approved, and programmed for development and operation by EAH Housing of Honolulu in FY 2021 on the upper 5.6 acre lot. A combined one-stop medical outpatient clinic and service center for veterans is also planned and approved by the county on our lower lot. We were successful in obtaining congressional approval to fund construction of a combined CBOC and service facility for the VA in Hilo. We recently provided them site information with several communications in response to their formal Request for Information and are now awaiting a VA Request for Proposal (RFP) for which we’re positioned to compete. Updated information as it becomes available will be found on our web site, right here on this page.
For the CBOC proposal and with funding from a state Grant-in-Aid that Gov Ige released to us, we hired Hilo Architect, Scott Fleming, to design the above facility from criteria required by the VA’s planning manual. Engineering assistance was obtained from Hilo-based Engineering Partners Inc. and Isemoto Contracting was awarded the contract for basic infrastructure and the entry way on Kawili street. Our building design meets the VA’s location and seismic design requirements, the minimum LEED standards, and includes structural design to withstand a category 4 hurricane. It is easily modified to a floor plan of their choosing with no changes to the engineering plans.
